32mm Gundam Style Robots

Take a look at those annoying bright colors! Awesome for little kids' birthday party favors ... not so much for gritty sci-fi. Or even campy sci-fi. But now I'll ask you to look past the colors and look at the price (you can get a bag of over 100 for about $10!) and the styling. These are certainly not fine sculpt figures, but at ten-for-a-buck, they have enough detail to work with for numbers of rank and file figures. They are also not hard plastic, but through the magic of Krylon Fusion paint we can get a nice even base coat that will take regular hobby paints. So I primed them in black with the Krylon, after doubling their cost by mounting them on 1" fender washers.

There's not much else to this other than picking a paint scheme and going at it. I have a number of different paint schemes on display, to let the 'bots serve as auxiliaries and extra squads for my other minis. Some of the paintups are very simple (a couple of colors), and for others I worked to add a reasonable level of detail. Since I already asked you to look past the garish colors of the toys, now I will ask you to look past the limits of my painting to the potential of these figures.

We'll start with this one. The simple B&W paint scheme with some modest dry brushing shows the level of detail on the figures. Again, it won't make the master sculptors cower in terror for their livelihood, but it is pretty decent for a bunch of rank and file guys.

This paintjob actually has less detail than the B&W ones, but I think it is a nice effect. It would also be a shame to waste a really good sculpt job on an effect like this. It's hard to tell from the picture, but the drybrushing was with metallic gold paint, so these guys really shine in person.

Here are some greys. Again, pretty basic but ready for tabletop. While you can't control the ratio of the different figure types, this shows how you can use the different designs to indicate rank and file (sword raised), fire team leader (with shield), and squad leader (out front). Or whatever other distinctions you want.

These Rising Sun battlesuits will square off against my All-American Rocketmen in the future. This also shows that along with the detail, there is some nice real estate on the figures to add details like national or rank insignia. If the photography were better, you would distincly see three different shades of grey on these guys to tell the three squads apart easily.

This is a more gundamy paint scheme. I did to a little surgery to them as well ... I repositioned some arms for variety, then added little clear plastic pieces as force swords. I need to straighten out the banner pole ... I'll get to it as soon as I have made some hybrid US-Japan and UK-Japan flag designs ...

Just some augmentees for another force...

And the piece of resistance ... more construction bots (or exoskeleton construction workers). While they are the same figure as the B&W at the start, I used a wider variety of colors - the hands, feet, and patellae are all exposed metal (silver); and I added some warning lights and such over the natural details.
